What is a Magnet?

A magnet attracts iron and other metals. In its natural state it is called magnetite from the Greek magnesia, from the name of the town where it was first discovered in Asia Minor. Aristotle wrote that the virtures of a a certain rock were known in ancient Macedonia, a Greek province where it is found. This curious rock's virtues were due to divine essence and therefore understood only by the gods. According to legend a Greek sheepherder called Magnes  accidently discovered this rock. One day while walking the hills he was using a iron baton and it was attracted to a nearby rock. He tried to separate it from the rock and could only do that with great effert. He broke off pieces of this rock and carried it always with him. He was convienced that it had supernatural powers. And it seemed that it did because he no longer felt as tired and weary. Those wishing to take advantage of these wonderful powers fashioned amulets and other jewelry with some pieces of the rock worked in. Wishing to stay eternally young, Cleopatra wore a magnet on her forehead. Before the birth of Christ the curative powers of magnets were wide accepted by Chinese, Hindu and Egyptian doctors. Starting with Aristotle and on down through the centuries famous scientists and philosophers have studied the medical properties of the stone called magnet.

Dr. Nakagawa published the results of a study in 1976 of great proportions in that it involved 11,648 magnet users. Because he studied so many people you could say his study was quite significant. Magnetite is created by the decomposition of volcanic rocks due to erosion. After an volcanic eruption, lava retains a certain amount of magnetic energy which it releases into rock decomposing from the influence of the atmosphere. From a chemical view is an iron ore. This magnetic iron ore is attracted to iron and other metals. It is an iron oxide with a formula of Fe304. You might say it is hemitite with an attitude. Its crystals are octagonal and cubical. Comes in black and brown and has a varible  density of 4-5.2. It is best know for its attraction to different natural substances such as iron, nickel, cobalt and chrome.
